بيت الشعر أو الخيمة ، هي واحدة من أبرز الأغراض الحياة البدوية القديمة، والحديثة أيضاً، حاضنة المجالس ورفيقة جلسات السمر في البر. وقد عُرفت الخيمة بـ “بيت الشّعر” الذي كان بيت البدو الذي يقيمون فيه، ويحملونه معهم في ترحالهم، وهو الأنسب لطريقة حياة سكان المنطقة التي لم تكن تعرف الاستقرار في مكان واحد

بيت الشعر يصنع من شعر الماعز الذي يُخلط بصوف الضأن، لأنه يتماسك عند نزول المطر عليه، بينما يكسبه خلطه بالصوف قوة تجعله يقاوم حرارة الشمس والرياح والرمال. ويرجع أصل الخيمة العربية التي كانت متواجدة في شبه الجزيرة العربية إلى سلطنة عمان واليمن حيث تظهر الدراسات وجود رسوم دالة على ذلك. وتختلف أشكال وأحجام بيت الشعر.

هناك نوعان للخيمة العربية، الأول خيمة لفصل الصيف (بيت الصيف) وهو مصنوع من أكياس الخيش أو الصوف، وخيمة لفصل الشتاء (بيت المشتى)، مصنوع من شعر الماعز، الذي يحوي مواد دهنية طبيعية تمنع تسرّب الماء إلى داخل الخيمة. كما أن النسيج مرن مما يمنع الماء من إتلاف أو تمزيق الشقاق.

La maison poilue est composée de poils de chèvre, mélangés à de la laine d'agneau, parce qu'ils se tiennent ensemble lorsqu'il pleut, tandis que le mélanger avec de la laine lui permet de résister à la chaleur du soleil, du vent et du sable. La tente , qui existait jadis dans la péninsule arabique, remonte à Oman et au Yémen, où des études montrent qu'il existe des graphiques les montrent. Il existe deux types de tente arabe, une pour l’été (tente), faite en laine ou en toile de jute, et une tente d’hiver (maison d'hiver), faite de poils de chèvre, qui contient des matières grasses naturelles qui empêchent la pénétration d’eau dans la tente. Le tissu est également élastique, empêchant l'eau d'endommager ou de déchirer les failles.
